Telecommunications project financial evaluation

Broadband Access Strategies has developed a number of comprehensive business and cost models for its clients. These have typically been used to help senior management appreciate the relative sensitivities of project profitability and cash flow to key parameters such as the capital cost of the equipment, ARPU and backhaul costs. An example of the dashboard developed as a front end to our modelling work is discussed on the page dealing with software tools. Our business modelling work has over the years covered almost all of the spectrum of telecommunications projects from ADSL (LLU and sub-loop unbundling) through cable broadband to mobile and fixed wireless broadband. We have constructed a number of models for clients wishing to understand the merits and drawbacks of WiMAX both in its fixed and mobile forms.

Spectrum pricing and mobile business case development

This area of our work largely flows from our expertise in mobile and broadband wireless described above. Typically we would also consider the effect of the existing market shares of the various potential bidders for the spectrum, their positioning and probable future market strategies and whether or not the spectrum would be used to provide totally new services or replace existing services with more efficient or attractive market offerings.

Market research and detailed demographic analysis

Much of our consulting work for clients involves bringing together top level research that combines the capabilities in terms of service offerings of a technology with the capital and operating costs and the market demand. From our earliest research studies for mobile operators and the regional development agencies we have conducted market research in both the business and consumer markets to evaluate the demand for various mobile and broadband services. We have conducted telephone based questionnaire research, business focus groups and depth interviews. Although most of the quantitative work has required fewer that 500 samples for the required level of accuracy we have also conducted larger ICT benchmarking studies for the regional development agencies of over 2,800 samples. In recent years we have also conducted web-based questionnaire surveys.

ICT business strategy development

Broadband Access Strategies and its associates have helped a number of medium sized companies develop ICT strategies and business plans that align with the overall strategy and plans for the business as a whole. We have found that IT managers are often so busy with the urgent matter of keeping the ever increasingly complex business networks running securely and efficiently that they are unable to devote sufficient quality time to the business of strategic planning. Typically Broadband Access Strategies works with the IT manager and their team to understand not only the challenges of the current IT infrastructure and software but also how it will need to develop to meet the future objectives of the business. We draw not only on our technical expertise but also on on skills in interviewing other senior managers, e.g. operations, finance and HR. The ICT strategy can then be written-up, planned and costed and updated on an annual basis in line with the companies other strategic and business planning documents.

Flexible and remote working

Broadband infrastructure and the capabilities of modern PCs have led many office workers to ask why they have to travel to work when they could work equally effectively from the comfort of their own homes. Studies in the field of remote working for our clients have shown that out-of-date management practices, particularly the need to see staff at their desks working, are holding back the adoption of remote working and the efficiency savings in terms of office space, time and reduced absenteeism that it brings. Staff too are often reluctant to work 100% away from the office due to fears of isolation and being considered to be off the career ladder. Broadband Access Strategies and its associates bring together the expertise to help organisations plan and promote remote working not only in terms of the technology and particularly the security necessary but also the mentoring for middle and senior management staff as they plan and implement the necessary organisational changes. Broadband Access Strategies is a signatory of the WorkWise Concordat launched by Sir Digby Jones in May 2007.
